A further 600,000 people could leave the workforce by the end of the decade unless employers lead a “fundamental shift” in the way ill health is approached at work, the Keep Britain Working report has warned.
Without a ‘fundamental shift’ from businesses, 600,000 more people could leave the workforce owing to sickness by 2030
The report, led by former John Lewis boss Sir Charlie Mayfield, critiqued the current model where individuals and the NHS have been left to tackle the “rising tide of ill health” in UK workplaces.
It instead argued sickness must become a shared responsibility between employers, employees and health services, with businesses facing an estimated £85bn a year in costs related to illness.
