Danielle Smith uses notwithstanding clause to end Alberta teachers' strike

Alberta Teachers' Strike Ends with Notwithstanding Clause

The province-wide teachers' strike in Alberta may end as early as Wednesday, but its aftermath will be long-lasting.

On October 6, 51,000 Alberta public, francophone, and Catholic schoolteachers began a legal strike.

Premier Danielle Smith introduced back-to-work legislation, Bill 2, also known as the Back to School Act, using the Notwithstanding Clause of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The UCP has rammed through the Legislative Assembly to convey key messages, including: to unions, especially public sector unions, "we don't like negotiating and, if you defy us, we won't negotiate at all."

The strike's end will have lasting effects on the province and its education system.

Author's summary: Alberta's teachers' strike ends with legislation.
