New Legislation Targets Derelict Properties in Saskatchewan
The provincial government is expanding its efforts to address unsafe and derelict buildings through amendments to The Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods Act (SCAN).
The new legislation, effective November 1, 2025, grants the SCAN unit greater authority to identify and take action against nuisance properties deemed unfit for human habitation or that negatively impact nearby residents.
- SCAN officers can apply for rehabilitation orders to demolish or restore properties to a safe condition, with ownership remaining with the property owner, who bears related costs.
- Forfeiture orders can transfer ownership to the government, allowing SCAN to demolish, repair, and sell the site to recover expenses.
