Alberta's Rat-Free Status: Can It Be Maintained?

University of Alberta anthropology professor Darcie DeAngelo researches the relationship between rats and humans, exploring the feasibility of Alberta's 75-year rat-free status.

DeAngelo's interest in rats began while studying military wasteland and minefields for her Master's degree. In Cambodia, rats are used to detect landmines due to their keen sense of smell and lightweight, allowing them to safely cross landmines without detonating them.

The rat was a different actor in the minefield, so it created a different choreography of landmine detection.

DeAngelo has been collecting stories about rats, with many people sharing their experiences and perspectives on these animals.

Author's summary: Alberta's rat-free status is explored by a U of A professor.
