Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid announced that his centrist party, Yesh Atid, is withdrawing from the World Zionist Organization. He accused the 127-year-old quasi-governmental body of corruption and political cronyism.
Lapid criticized Israel’s “national institutions” for prioritizing political interests over the public good. He stated that ongoing corruption is alienating Diaspora Jews from Israel.
“Corruption was pushing Diaspora Jews away from Israel,” Lapid said.
He also intends to nationalize the Jewish National Fund (Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael), which manages more than 13% of Israel’s land.
This decision disrupted coalition talks at the World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem, a global event held every five years. Delegates from Israel and Diaspora Jewish groups were negotiating a power-sharing agreement among political factions.
Former Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid spoke at the Jewish Federations of North America General Assembly in Tel Aviv on April 24, 2023.
The development was widely covered by various news outlets, including balanced updates from the Forward and others providing daily analysis.
Yair Lapid's party quit the World Zionist Organization, condemning corruption and political favoritism, signaling a significant rift in Israeli-Diaspora Jewish relations.
