A broad tsunami alert was issued for coastal strips through Mexico and Guatemala soon after.
The ground remained restless, affecting towns further north into Guatemala and El Salvador too.
Moments after 4 a.m., a 7.3 quake rattled the same area.
No accounts of damage or damaged buildings surfaced after the warnings.
