Raise Your Glasses. Now, Hold Them Up Until Your Arms Shake.

Five pounds of lager, one outstretched arm, and the creeping onset of regret. This is Type 2 fun at its finest—the mix of agony and ecstasy found in steinholding competitions.

At Oktoberfest NYC, I’m with Kim Planert, a UPS driver from Ohio, standing in Rumsey Playfield, Central Park. Beneath London plane trees and a clear September sky, the scene is vibrant with tradition: lederhosen-clad men, daring dirndl displays, polka beats, and familiar Oktoberfest tunes blended with classics like “Country Roads” and “Sweet Caroline.”

While some dismiss Oktoberfest as little more than alcoholic cosplay, for those who appreciate seasonal charm, it's a festive way to celebrate autumn.

Competitor Profile: Kim Planert

At 71, Planert’s attire is modest compared to others: a checkered blue-and-white Tyrolean hat, an oversized Hofbräu T-shirt, and cargo shorts. But his presence goes beyond casual revelry.

This marks his fourth consecutive year competing in the Hofbräu Masskrugstemmen National Competition, held on Rumsey’s concert stage. Masskrugstemmen, or steinholding, challenges participants to hold a five-pound beer glass at arm’s length for as long as possible.

“I’ve actually added two minutes to my time,” Planert shares.

The sport demands endurance, focus, and a steady arm, blending the celebration of beer culture with a unique physical challenge.

Event Atmosphere

Planert’s dedication to steinholding underscores the event’s blend of fun, competition, and cultural homage.
