Carrie Bickmore Named 2026 Victorian Australian of the Year

Radio host and former television presenter Carrie Bickmore has been honored as the 2026 Victorian Australian of the Year for her impactful work in brain cancer research.

Contributions to Brain Cancer Research

Since 2015, Bickmore has raised over $27 million to support brain cancer research. Her dedication stems from a personal loss, as her husband Greg Lange died from brain cancer in 2010.

Founding of Charitable Initiatives

Bickmore founded the Carrie’s Beanies 4 Brain Cancer Foundation, transforming funding efforts for brain cancer research in Australia. In 2021, she established The Brain Cancer Centre to foster collaboration among researchers and clinicians, focusing on clinical trials and advancing treatment options.

The Brain Cancer Centre has secured an additional $45 million to support research projects nationwide.

Recognition and Personal Reflections

At the award ceremony in Melbourne, Bickmore shared her feelings about the honor, expressing humility and initial discomfort with the recognition.

“I feel like there are so many people, not only in the brain cancer space but in the world, that are doing incredible things. It made me deeply uncomfortable,” she stated.

Author's summary: Carrie Bickmore’s unwavering commitment to brain cancer research, driven by personal tragedy, has raised millions and inspired nationwide collaboration to improve patient outcomes.
