The Supreme Court of Canada dismissed the last-ditch appeal against the order to cull a flock of ostriches at the Universal Ostrich Farm in Edgewood, British Columbia. This ruling removes any legal barriers for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) to carry out the planned depopulation of the birds.
The CFIA confirmed it will proceed with the complete depopulation of the ostrich flock. Although specific methods for killing the birds have not been detailed, a CFIA manual lists options such as breaking necks, lethal injection, gassing, or shooting.
Supporters gathered at the farm, forming a prayer circle as co-owner Dave Bilinski shared the court’s decision. He expressed hope, saying,
“Maybe a miracle will happen yet.”
Some protesters vocalized strong opposition. One called the CFIA “criminals” and expressed intent to leave Canada, while another described the ruling as “disgusting.” The group held a prayer asking for a “miracle Thursday.”
Supporters had been arriving early at the property, despite the rainy weather. Pasitney, a vocal advocate, declared her intention to make it her “life's mission” to change how the CFIA operates. After the ruling, she told media,
“It’s murdering, murdering healthy animals that have been 35 years on this planet.”
The CFIA is set to fully depopulate the ostrich flock following the Supreme Court’s rejection of the appeal, despite strong protests and calls for a miracle from the farm’s supporters.
