Hundreds without power in downtown Toronto for more than a day as crews work to repair damaged cable

Power Outage Affects Hundreds in Downtown Toronto

The power outage impacting downtown Toronto covers an area from just east of Parliament Street to just west of Jarvis Street, extending from Queen Street East down to south of Front Street East, according to Toronto Hydro’s outage map.

Areas Affected

More than 24 hours after the outage began, hundreds of residents remain without power.

Cause and Repair Efforts

The outage started after a power cable was damaged due to a “third-party dig-in at an active construction site in the area,” Toronto Hydro reported on Wednesday evening. The construction was not connected to Toronto Hydro but caused significant damage to their infrastructure.

“Repairs have been more complex and time-consuming than anticipated,” Toronto Hydro said. “The damage caused by the third-party contractor is extensive, with the dig-ins occurring in multiple spots.”

Crews worked through the night making “significant progress” and are now “nearing completion” of the repairs, Toronto Hydro stated Thursday morning.

Updated Restoration Timeline

The expected restoration was delayed from 11 a.m. to “mid-afternoon” Thursday, extending the outage to approximately 30 hours in total.

The outage began just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, and nearly 600 customers remain without power.
