The Diocese of Auchi, Nigeria, announced the death of a young seminarian kidnapped by bandits in July along with two others. Father Linus Imoedemhe, assistant director of communications for the diocese, shared the details.
On July 10, gunmen attacked the Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary and abducted three seminarians aged between 14 and 17. During the assault, a security guard, Christopher Aweneghieme, was killed.
Bishop Gabriel Dunia "has expressed his deep pain and sorrow over the loss of the young seminarian and has called on security agencies to intensify efforts toward protecting the lives and property of all citizens," Father Imoedemhe reported.
"The Diocese of Auchi remains committed to the values of faith, peace, and justice, trusting in God’s infinite mercy to bring comfort to the bereaved family, the seminary community, and all those affected by this tragedy," read the diocesan statement.
Days after the kidnapping, the diocese confirmed the kidnappers contacted them demanding ransom, underscoring ongoing security challenges facing religious communities in the region.
This tragic event highlights the Diocese of Auchi’s grief and urgent call for enhanced security to protect vulnerable communities amid increasing violence in Nigeria.
