Two Congolese civil society groups have filed a legal discovery action in the United States against a Texas-based oil and gas company.
The company was awarded the largest concession to extract methane from Democratic Republic of Congo’s Lake Kivu.
extraction posed “risk of catastrophic explosion that could expose the millions of people living on the shores of the lake to fatal gases.”
The filing in Texas alleges the bidding process broke laws.
An aerial view of Lake Kivu, which borders the DRC and Rwanda, shows the area of concern.
