Research has shown that using saturated salt solutions, a method long employed in a German castle, is a cheap and effective way to conserve artifacts, offering advantages over traditional methods like silica and air-conditioning.
A conservator at Veste Coburg, an 800-year-old castle in northeastern Bavaria, Heiner Grieb, has been utilizing this technique to care for vitrines holding irreplaceable glass objects. By placing saturated solutions of water and magnesium chloride inside the cases, Grieb and his colleagues maintain optimal humidity levels.
The same powders used in making gingerbread or tofu, when mixed correctly, can protect treasures from harm.
Author's summary: Salt solutions are being used as a cheap conservation method.
