FCC Chair Brendan Carr plans to eliminate a declaratory ruling made by his predecessor to give the government more power to force carriers to strengthen network security.
The ruling, made in January by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) under then-Chair Jessica Rosenworcel, aimed to require telecommunications companies to ensure sufficient cybersecurity protections are in place.
The decision came in the wake of the widespread attack on U.S. telecom networks by the China-nexus threat group Salt Typhoon, highlighting the poor cybersecurity of the companies.
Brendan Carr, then a member of the FCC, voted against the declaration.
