Hongkongers Preserve Chung Yeung Traditions Amid Chikungunya Concerns
Despite the risk of chikungunya infection, Hong Kong residents are determined to pay their respects to ancestors during the Chung Yeung Festival.

Grave sweepers at a major Hong Kong cemetery have taken preventive measures, including using mosquito repellent and wearing long-sleeve clothing, to protect themselves from mosquito bites.
- A mosquito repellent station was set up at the entrance of the Diamond Hill Columbarium.
- The cemetery is about 1km from the public housing estate where the first reported local chikungunya case resides.
Some grave sweepers, like 52-year-old Michael Chau, urge authorities to do more to curb the spread of the disease.
We sprayed mosquito repellent and wore long-sleeve clothing before going grave sweeping today. We did everything we could to ward off mosquitoes.
