A selection of Suzhou prints, assembled by Christer von der Burg, has been purchased by the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art.
- More than 100 prints were acquired by each museum.
- The prints are large-scale and polychrome, featuring subjects such as cityscapes, elite women, birds, and flowers.
- The works reflect a blend of Chinese painting traditions with European conventions, including linear perspective.
Many Suzhou prints were lost during the Cultural Revolution in China, but some were preserved in European and Japanese collections.
Woodblock printing with colour was pioneered in China and reached its zenith in 18th-century Suzhou.
