City of Nanaimo Introduces Stricter Fines for Water Use Violations
The City of Nanaimo has updated its fines for damaging water infrastructure, with the council passing three readings of a bylaw to introduce new penalties.
According to city documents, Nanaimo has experienced increasing vandalism and tampering with water infrastructure, including turning on fire hydrants without permission and removing parts to render them inoperative.
As a deterrent, the city is looking to compare itself to other communities and increase its fines for tampering with such assets to match what other municipalities are doing.
The new schedule of fines and penalties, which hadn't been updated since 2006, aims to address the rising incidents of vandalism and tampering.
