Government Shutdown Disrupts Air Travel, Federal Services, and Public Assistance
The federal government shutdown, now in its fourth week, is causing widespread disruptions across various sectors, affecting air travel, federal employees, and public assistance programs.
Air Travel Delays and Staffing Shortages
Airports nationwide are experiencing significant delays due to staffing shortages among air traffic controllers. On Saturday alone, more than 20 incidents of controller shortages were reported, leading to ground stops at major airports, including Los Angeles International Airport.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed that these shortages are expected to continue, potentially causing further delays and cancellations in the coming days.
Approximately 13,000 air traffic controllers and 50,000 TSA officers are working without pay during the shutdown.
