Two hundred years ago, DeWitt Clinton embarked on a canal boat by the shores of Lake Erie, marking the beginning of the Erie Canal's maiden voyage.
Clinton's vessel, the Seneca Chief, traveled from Buffalo to Albany and then down the Hudson River to New York City, culminating in a ceremonial event on Nov. 4, where barrels of Lake Erie water were poured into the Atlantic, dubbed "the Wedding of the Waters."

The Erie Canal is an engineering marvel and a National Historic Monument, celebrated in folk song, and inspired young politician Abraham Lincoln to dream of becoming "the DeWitt Clinton of Illinois."
