Iowa Officials Accused of "Sweetheart Deal" with Meatpacker
An environmental group alleges that Iowa officials secretly fast-tracked a legal settlement with a major meatpacker, Agri Star Meat and Poultry LLC.
The settlement included a $50,000 fine for around 60 water pollution violations, equivalent to one day of intentional Clean Water Act violations.
The amount is considered a "sweetheart deal" by the environmental group Driftless Water Defenders.
- The group filed a motion on Oct. 21, submitting newly produced documents previously classified as confidential.
- The documents allegedly show that the Iowa Department of Natural Resources and the meatpacker coordinated behind the scenes to keep details of the settlement from the public.
