Cam Atkinson, a celebrated player in Columbus Blue Jackets history, has retired from the team after signing a one-day honorary contract.
Atkinson, a sixth-round draft pick in 2008, holds several franchise records, including second in points, goals, and game-winning goals. He is also a two-time All-Star.
"We have so many friends here," Atkinson said. "The Fifth Line are some of the best fans in the league."
Atkinson expressed his love for the city of Columbus and its community, holding back tears during his news conference.
"I remember coming here and engraving myself into the city and community," he said. "I'm just happy to call this place home."
