A 41-year-old former Alberta resident, Aren Bylot Pearson, has been sentenced to life in prison in Scotland for the murder of his 24-year-old girlfriend, Claire Leveque, from Edmonton.
Pearson was sentenced by Judge Lord Paul Arthurson at Glasgow High Court, with a minimum term of 25 years before being eligible for parole.
The killing was a "sustained episode of feral butchery," and one of extreme and prolonged violence.
The judge criticized Pearson's testimony during the trial, calling it "an exercise in victim blaming," filled with derogatory and false claims meant to further humiliate Leveque even after her death.
Pearson will serve his sentence for the February 11, 2024, murder that took place in Sandness, on the Shetland Islands.
