A report by the Council of Europe's Committee for the Prevention of Torture (CPT) highlights serious deficiencies in Romanian forensic psychiatric hospitals.
The CPT identified these shortcomings during a 2024 visit to several hospitals, including Săpoca Hospital, Pădureni-Grajduri Hospital, and first-time visits to Jebel and Ștei psychiatric and safety measures hospitals.
The treatment of some patients in forensic psychiatric hospitals is neglectful and, in certain cases, could amount to inhuman and degrading treatment and an ongoing violation of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The CPT urges Romanian authorities to address these serious shortcomings in patient treatment and detention conditions.
