Keep your eyes peeled - Salmon are returning to Quinsam River

Salmon Return to Quinsam River

Pacific salmon have been spotted in the Quinsam River, marking their return to rivers and streams across Vancouver Island after a long journey.

The peak run is expected to occur later in October. The Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) has developed an interactive Salmon Spotting map to help locate unique salmon spotting locations and witness this migration.

Salmon Migration Cycle

From late summer to early winter, Pacific salmon return to their birthplace in freshwater rivers to spawn, after spending years feeding and growing in the ocean.

Pacific salmon are born in freshwater rivers, migrate to the ocean, then return to their natal stream to reproduce and die.

The PSF's Salmon Spotting map highlights the best public spots in the province to observe this natural spectacle in the wild.
