Borrowing a phone charger from someone else is a common practice, but it can pose a risk that many people are not aware of.

October is Fire Prevention Month, and the Traverse City Fire Department is using this opportunity to educate students about the potential dangers of rechargeable devices, including lithium-ion batteries.

"We're actually focusing on grades fifth through ninth this year, and we're projected to hit every one of them,"

said Fire Inspector Jacob Steichen, who is leading the effort to raise awareness about the importance of respecting powerful and prevalent rechargeable devices.

The goal is to educate every student in the area about the possible risks associated with these devices.
