A remarkable discovery in the Gerger district, between Adıyaman and Omid, reveals the centuries-old presence of Syriacs in the region.
In the village of Oymaklı, a stone with a Syriac inscription was found, shedding new light on the region's history and Syriac presence. The inscription, carved on a rectangular stone, reads:
This house, this structure, was built in 1186.
The stone was previously used as a doorstep in a home built 30 to 40 years ago in Bayık hamlet, Oymaklı village. Adiyaman Museum Director Mehmet Alkan inspected the site and found that the text mentions buildings and wells in the area.
According to Alkan, previous studies show that there were many water wells and vineyards in the area, dating back to the fourth century AD.
Author's summary: Ancient inscription reveals Turkey's Syriac history.
