During the New York Islanders’ home opener, Matthew Schaefer scored his first NHL goal. The 18-year-old defenseman achieved this milestone in a game against the Washington Capitals.
Schaefer scored at 16:41 of the third period, during a power play, after a scramble for the loose puck. He chopped it by Capitals goalie Logan Thompson to cut the deficit to 4-2.
A challenge by Capitals head coach Spencer Carbery for a hand pass was made, but the goal stood after a review. This added to Schaefer's early accomplishments, including his first assist and point in the Islanders’ first game of the season against the Pittsburgh Penguins.
