The Western States 100, a 100-miler race, has changed its long-debated gear rule to allow trekking poles and traction devices, such as spikes, starting from the 53rd edition in 2026.
"This is a significant update and one that has been discussed and debated internally for the last 10 years or so,"
Race director Craig Thornley stated that runner safety and the evolution of equipment drove this change. The board voted to update its longstanding rule prohibiting these devices.
Western States 100 begins in Olympic Valley, Calif. The race's board made this decision after years of discussion.
