Of the 12 federal holidays, Columbus Day is one of only three celebrating a person, along with the birthdays of George Washington and Martin Luther King Jr.

Unlike Washington and King, Columbus has a limited connection to the US, as he
never set foot on soil within our national bordersand didn’t realize he encountered new lands until his third voyage in 1498.
