Desert locust outbreak continues in the West - 26 November 2025 (UPDATE)

Overview

The desert locust outbreak persisted across Mauritania and Western Sahara throughout November 2025. Favorable ecological conditions, including recent rains and green vegetation, allowed hopper groups, bands, and adult swarms to remain active in multiple regions.

Current Situation

Hopper groups and adult locusts were reported in central and northern Mauritania, particularly across Inchiri, Adrar, and Dakhlet Nouadhibou. Similar infestations occurred in southern Western Sahara, where scattered adults have started to form small groups. These populations are expected to increase if weather conditions stay suitable.

Ground and aerial survey teams have been monitoring the infested areas and carrying out necessary control measures. However, vast and remote desert landscapes continue to challenge operations.

Outlook

Locust breeding is likely to continue during December in both Mauritania and Western Sahara, particularly where residual moisture and vegetation persist. If not adequately controlled, new adult groups may form and move westward or northward as weather conditions shift.

Timely monitoring and preventive control actions remain essential to avoid a broader regional spread.

“Sustained surveillance and rapid coordinated responses are vital to limit the locust population before migration begins,” stated local agricultural authorities.

Author’s summary: Desert locust populations remain active in Mauritania and Western Sahara, with continued breeding expected unless rapid control and monitoring efforts intervene.
