Botanist on Quest to Identify and Name Endangered Orchids
Pankaj Kumar has spent 25 years trekking through Asia's deepest forests in search of rare orchids, discovering 38 species.
In 2012, Kumar carefully watched over 23 small, wild plants in the forests of Southeast Asia, waiting for them to bloom to determine their species.
After 10 months, a tiny white petal finally revealed itself in August 2013, and Kumar was almost certain it was an unidentified species.
At the faintest touch, the fragile bloom slipped from its stem.
This realization brought a heartbreaking truth: to name the orchid, Kumar would have to dissect the very flower he waited so long to see.
