Car-Free Masterplan by OMA
A key highlight is the Chengdu Future City project, developed by architecture studio OMA. This masterplan covers 4.6 square kilometers in eastern Chengdu's rolling hills. It features six clusters inspired by traditional village settlements, each designed to harmonize with the local geography and topography. The zones include spaces for education, innovation, housing, government, commercial, and public venues, with a unique elevated circular transport hub.
Sustainability and Mobility
The entire masterplan is car-free, emphasizing pedestrian access within ten minutes across clusters. A smart mobility network with automated vehicles connects the zones to the broader city, aiming to challenge traditional urban planning models focused on road networks and floor area. Instead, it prioritizes integration with the natural environment and enhancing connectivity without car dependency.
Integration of Innovation and Education
OMA’s design also includes areas dedicated to education and innovation, such as the International Educational Park for universities. Nearby developments, designed by other studios, further support transit-oriented development to maximize access to public transport, reinforcing the sustainable vision for Chengdu's future urban landscape.
