## Solar-Hydrogen Microgrid Inaugurated in Ladakh
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh inaugurated a pioneering solar hydrogen-based microgrid system in Chushul, Ladakh. The initiative aims to enhance clean energy access and ensure reliable power supply for the remote and strategically important region near the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
### Key Project Highlights
- The microgrid integrates solar power generation with hydrogen storage and fuel cell technology.
- It is designed to produce green hydrogen through solar energy and store it for continuous electricity supply.
- The system will power critical installations and residential areas even during night or low sunlight conditions.
### Strategic and Environmental Significance
Rajnath Singh emphasized that this project reflects India's commitment to energy self-reliance and climate sustainability.
> “This innovative initiative in Ladakh brings the Indian defence sector closer to achieving energy independence while supporting the national green energy transition,” he stated.
The project demonstrates how renewable technologies can function effectively under extreme climatic conditions. It also aligns with India’s larger mission of promoting renewable energy and reducing carbon emissions in the defence sector.
### Development and Collaboration
The microgrid was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) in collaboration with Indian industry partners. Engineers designed the system to operate autonomously, maintaining stable output even in temperatures below freezing.
### Impact on Local Communities
The deployment of the system is expected to enhance socio-economic development in Chushul by providing sustainable electricity for communication systems, healthcare, and education facilities.
> “Projects like these will serve as models for similar efforts in remote border areas across India,” the Defence Minister added.
