The USS Gerald R. Ford, the largest and most advanced U.S. aircraft carrier, along with three accompanying warships, entered the Caribbean on Tuesday, raising Venezuela’s military alert.
A Pentagon spokesperson, Sean Parnell, stated the carrier strike group “will enhance and augment existing capabilities to disrupt narcotics trafficking” in the region.
In response, Venezuela announced it was mobilizing its entire military, including weaponry and troops, preparing for a possible confrontation with the U.S.
The Wall Street Journal noted the “firepower” of the Ford strike group “goes beyond what is required to strike the small boats that the Trump administration says are being used to smuggle drugs.”
Mark Cancian of the Center for Strategic and International Studies told The Washington Post: “The only reason to move a strategic asset like an aircraft carrier from the Middle East to the Caribbean is to use it against Venezuela.”
He added, with the Ford’s arrival, “the shot clock has started” for President Donald Trump to “use it or move it.”
According to Reuters, America’s military significantly outweighs Venezuela’s, which is weakened by inadequate training, low wages, and outdated equipment.
Author’s summary: The arrival of the USS Gerald R. Ford near Venezuela has triggered full military mobilization there, highlighting escalating U.S. naval pressure in the region amid drug trafficking claims.
