The Canton of Aargau in Switzerland has launched an online map detailing the suitability of various geothermal energy applications. This initiative aims to support regional development by providing a strategic basis for investments and project planning.
The map highlights the canton's favorable conditions for geothermal energy, particularly for shallow heat extraction using ground source heat pumps. This renewable energy source significantly contributes to a sustainable and reliable energy supply, supporting the goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
In March 2022, the Cantonal Government approved a motion from the Grand Council to create a geothermal register to assess the geothermal potential across Aargau's municipalities. Following this, the Energy Division of the Department of Construction, Transport and Environment, along with experts, conducted an in-depth study of the geothermal resources available in the canton.
