Moderate Liberal Assumes Leadership After Party Turmoil

A moderate Liberal, Mark Parton, has taken charge of one of the weakest branches of the party after the unexpected resignation of its two leaders, Leanne Castley and Jeremy Hanson. They announced their departure on Monday, stating it would give the Liberals the best opportunity to form government in 2028.

Castley had earlier replaced Elizabeth Lee as party leader following the Liberals' defeat in the October 2024 election.

“In the spirit of ensuring a genuine fresh start for the new team, we will not be commenting publicly on the circumstances that have led to this decision,”

— Leanne Castley, statement on Monday

The Canberra Liberals have been out of power for over twenty years and are expected to remain in opposition for about 27 years by the time of the 2028 election.

Deborah Morris, known for her more conservative stance, has taken the role of deputy leader.

“It's vital that we continue to strengthen the cohesion within our party. By encouraging open dialogue, valuing diverse perspectives, and finding common ground, we can reinforce our shared purpose.”

— Mark Parton, statement

The Canberra Liberals continue to face criticism for being too conservative for the socially progressive ACT, where the party has no federal representatives.
