Starting with the next generation, Toyota plans to offer its popular Hilux pickup as a fully electric model. The battery electric vehicle (BEV) version will be primarily tailored to the Thai market, where it will also be manufactured.
The information, while partly speculative, is supported by strong evidence from a recent press briefing for Southeast Asian journalists. Toyota revealed a presentation slide featuring a blacked-out silhouette of a pickup truck along with Toyota’s BEV logo. Although the model was not explicitly named, it is clear that this represents an electric Hilux variant.
Toyota has been testing the electric Hilux concept with the Hilux Revo BEV prototype, introduced at the end of 2022. The prototype has been trialed in various environments, including mines in Thailand and Australia, demonstrating promising practical results.
Pras Ganesh, Executive Vice President of Toyota Motor Asia, stated to Reuters in May 2024: "A production version of the electric Hilux is confirmed and will be built in Thailand starting at the end of 2025."
Toyota is preparing to debut a fully electric Hilux pickup, mainly for the Thai market, backed by successful prototype testing and an official production announcement for late 2025.
