Strong winds are forecast to hit Metro Vancouver starting today, prompting safety warnings and precautions. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a wind warning for the area, forecasting gusts up to 90 km/h.
This warning follows an earlier rainfall alert caused by consecutive low-pressure systems affecting B.C.'s South Coast earlier this week.
“Strong winds that may cause damage are expected,” said ECCC.
“A strong low-pressure system will impact coastal B.C. this afternoon, generating very strong southeasterly winds of 70 km/h gusting to 90.”
“Winds will ease below warning criteria early this evening but will remain gusty out of the southwest until Friday morning.”
The wind warning covers a wide region including Metro Vancouver, East Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, Greater Victoria, and the Gulf Islands.
Residents of southwestern Metro Vancouver, such as Richmond and Delta, are advised to secure any loose items to prevent damage.
ECCC also cautioned about possible utility outages and interruptions to travel and services due to the strong winds.
BC Ferries is monitoring the “intensifying storm” closely and urges travelers to check the service notices page for potential route cancellations.
Residents and travelers in Metro Vancouver and surrounding areas should prepare for gusty winds up to 90 km/h, secure loose objects, and stay updated on weather warnings and transportation changes.
This wind event poses risks of damage and disruption; timely precautions are essential for community safety and travel planning.
