Hospital Clínic Presents Casebook to Promote Bioethics Culture
The new volume compiles 16 real cases deliberated by the Clinical Ethics Committee of Hospital Clínic between 2010 and 2021. It was presented at the Barcelona College of Physicians yesterday.

The book For a Bioethics Culture. Casebook 2010–2021 was prepared by the Clinical Ethics Committee of Hospital Clínic and published by the Hospital, the Chair of Legal Medicine, Professional Responsibility and Clinical Safety of the University of Barcelona, and the Barcelona College of Physicians (CoMB).
The presentation took place in the Assembly Hall of the Barcelona College of Physicians and featured several key figures:
- Josep Arimany, Director of the Practice Area at CoMB
- Josep Maria Campistol, General Director of the Clínic
- Ferran Masanés, President of the Clínic’s Clinical Ethics Committee and of the Research Ethics Committee of CoMB
- Magda Campins, President of CoMB’s Deontology Commission
Content and Coordination
Coordinated by Ferran Masanés and Ferran Céspedes, former secretary of the Clínic’s Clinical Ethics Committee, the book compiles 16 clinical cases that were thoroughly evaluated by the committee over eleven years.
Each case includes:
- A clinical summary
- The ethical dilemma presented
- The bioethical reasoning behind the case
- The committee’s recommendations
The volume "brings together real ethical dilemmas experienced in clinical practice and discussed by the committee over eleven years."
This casebook aims to foster a stronger culture of bioethics among healthcare professionals by sharing carefully analyzed real-world scenarios.
