Met Office and Grid team up to help windfarm productivity - Energy Live News

Met Office and NESO Collaborate to Boost Windfarm Efficiency

Britain’s energy future may rely as much on precise weather predictions as on renewable sources themselves. The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has partnered with the Met Office to enhance planning for extreme weather and optimize renewable power use.

The new cooperation, formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding, will embed meteorological expertise directly within NESO and strengthen strategic coordination between both entities. This collaboration comes amid rising climate challenges such as stronger storms, floods, and heatwaves that increasingly impact the nation’s power infrastructure.

Through shared data, artificial intelligence tools, and joint advisory work, NESO and the Met Office aim to improve prediction accuracy and advise the government on long-term climate risks. Their goal is to ensure sustained leadership for Britain in weather-driven energy management.

“Accurate forecasting will be vital to protect infrastructure and ensure that renewable power is used efficiently when it’s available.”

Met Office Fellow Dr Emily Wallace will join NESO on secondment, bringing expertise on how climate and extreme weather influence energy systems. Her role is to help planners anticipate issues early and identify smart, resilient operational strategies.

Author Summary

This partnership strengthens Britain’s renewable planning by combining weather science and energy management to address increasing climate-related challenges.
