Brazil: A Devastating Tornado Strikes Paraná

An extremely powerful tornado hit the southern Brazilian state of Paraná on Friday evening, leaving six people dead and more than 400 injured, according to local authorities.

Destruction in Foz do Iguaçu

The city of Foz do Iguaçu, located near the Iguazu River, was the hardest hit. Over half of its urban area suffered roof collapses and structural damage. Roads were blocked, power lines destroyed, and many neighborhoods remain without electricity.

Nearly 1,000 residents have been displaced, as reported by the state’s civil protection agency. The nearby city of Guarapuava also experienced partial damage from the violent winds.

Wind Speeds and Scale

The Paraná meteorological monitoring system estimated tornado wind speeds between 180 and 250 km/h, a level of destruction rarely registered in this part of Brazil.

Government and Relief Efforts

On Saturday, the Minister of Institutional Relations, Gleisi Hoffmann, and the acting Minister of Health, Adriano Massuda, visited the affected region to coordinate emergency response and evaluate reconstruction efforts.

"We will continue to assist the people of Paraná and provide them with all the necessary aid."

This message of solidarity was shared by President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva on the social platform X (formerly Twitter).

Ongoing Search and Support

Firefighters, Red Cross teams, and local volunteers remain mobilized to locate missing persons and offer temporary shelter to displaced families.
