The Edmonton Oilers might have found a promising internal option to strengthen their goaltending. Samuel Jonsson, a fifth-round pick in 2022, has caught attention during the 2024-25 season with impressive stats.
Playing for Bofors IK in Sweden’s second-tier professional league, Jonsson posted a 1.88 goals-against average (GAA) and a .922 save percentage (SV%) over 24 games. This outstanding performance led to a three-year, entry-level contract from the Oilers in April 2025.
Despite the Oilers signing veteran goalies Matt Tomkins and Connor Ingram, Jonsson started the 2025-26 season with the Fort Wayne Komets in the ECHL. His early results are impressive:
At only 21 years old, it’s unlikely Jonsson will have a significant NHL role during the 2025-26 season. However, his strong 2024-25 season and outstanding start in the minors indicate he has genuine NHL-caliber potential.
“His strong performance in 2024-25 and his red-hot start with the Komets in 2025-26 give reason to believe that he does have the potential to become an NHL-calibre goalie.”
Author’s summary: Samuel Jonsson is emerging as a talented goaltender prospect for the Edmonton Oilers, displaying excellent stats in both European and North American leagues, pointing to a promising NHL future.
