Metro Manila has elevated its disaster alert to Red, effective 5 p.m. Friday, as Super Typhoon Uwan intensifies rapidly and approaches Luzon with winds that may reach Signal No. 4 levels. Authorities have mobilized personnel, heavy rescue equipment, and emergency assets across the capital region.
The Metro Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (MMDRRMC), led by Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Romando Artes, declared the highest operational alert ahead of Uwan’s landfall. The typhoon could bring gale-force winds spanning up to 720 kilometers and heavy rains from Sunday through Tuesday.
“This is our highest state of readiness,” said Office of Civil Defense-NCR Director George F. Keyser during the emergency meeting. “We are not ruling out Signal No. 4 in the NCR as the rain volume could be unprecedented, even if the eye makes landfall far north.”
The Red Alert further requires mandatory coordination between all 17 local government units and national agencies to ensure unified disaster response. Officials continue to warn that rainfall intensity may become dangerous even under Signal No. 3 conditions.
Metro Manila has entered maximum alert mode as Super Typhoon Uwan threatens the region with extreme winds and heavy rainfall, prompting full-scale disaster readiness and inter-agency coordination.
