Album Review: Nervous Twitch – The Day Job Gets in the Way

When I first reviewed the Leeds-based band Nervous Twitch’s fourth album Some People Never Change back in 2022, I was struck by their energy and melodic punch. So it was a pleasant surprise to hear from singer Erin, inviting me to explore their new release — the very relatable The Day Job Gets in the Way.

From the opening track, it’s clear that Nervous Twitch haven’t lost their ability to turn daily frustrations into something joyful and defiant. Compared to their last record, which carried a “less-angry riot grrrl” attitude, this one feels more relaxed and playful, though it hasn’t lost its bite.

“Nervous Twitch haven’t lost their knack for making everyday frustrations sound like joyful rebellion.”

The band’s style here recalls The Slits — raw-edged punk with a strong DIY spirit — yet it’s very much their own. Their sound is scrappy but melodic, unpolished but irresistibly catchy. The production adds a vintage charm, with a rough-around-the-edges warmth reminiscent of a vinyl gem discovered in a second-hand shop.

At the heart of it all are Erin’s vocals — sharp yet inviting, floating above wiry guitars and a steady rhythm section. Even when the lyrics cut deep, her delivery gives them a surprising sense of warmth and humanity.

Author’s Summary

A lively slice of punk-pop that pairs grit with melody, showing Nervous Twitch’s gift for turning frustration into something full of charm and rebellion.
