Sigourney Weaver, known for her iconic roles in Aliens and Avatar, will join the Star Wars franchise in the 2026 release The Mandalorian and Grogu. With three major franchises already behind her—Ghostbusters, Alien, and Avatar—this marks her first involvement in Star Wars.
Weaver admitted that it was never her plan to join a fourth major franchise or to become part of the Star Wars universe. She shared,
“It was not my intention to find a fourth franchise. I didn’t ever imagine that I would enter the Star Wars world.”
In an interview with Empire, Weaver revealed that the script for The Mandalorian and Grogu convinced her to take the role. She explained,
“It’s always the script. So [with] The Mandalorian and Grogu, it was not my intention to find a fourth franchise, I didn’t ever imagine that I would enter the Star Wars world.
But what’s interesting about Star Wars now is they’re no longer trying to do the Star Wars to end all Star Wars. They’re letting the universe exist, and tell really interesting stories within that.”
Weaver's comments highlight a shift in Star Wars storytelling. Rather than aiming for one definitive saga, the franchise is now focusing on expanding its universe with diverse narratives. This move comes after the franchise struggled to stabilize following mixed reactions to Rian Johnson’s The Last Jedi.
Sigourney Weaver joins Star Wars with optimism, attracted by fresh storytelling that allows the universe to grow beyond a singular saga, marking a hopeful new chapter for the franchise.
