Monte Cristo, located in the town of Junee, New South Wales, around 470 kilometers southwest of Sydney, is often described as Australia's most haunted house. This Victorian-era manor, with a 140-year history, has now been put up for sale, inviting a courageous buyer willing to overlook its eerie legends.
Over more than a century, Monte Cristo has gathered countless ghostly tales and local myths. It’s widely believed that up to ten spirits inhabit the estate, including the original owners, Christopher and Elizabeth Crawley, who died in 1910 and 1933 respectively. The mansion's reputation has turned it into one of the Riverina region’s best-known landmarks.
"I've had a hand on my shoulder," said Olive Ryan in a 2015 interview with The Project. "I've had my name called when I've been here alone. It's common to hear footsteps on the balcony, and when you go out to look, there's no one there."
Ryan lived in the house for 50 years and claimed to feel the constant presence of its former occupants. Her son, Lawrence Ryan, who grew up inside the mansion, also reported an unshakable feeling of being watched.
The two-storey residence at 1 Homestead Lane still retains its original fireplaces and a grand ballroom. For years, it has operated as a museum and popular tourist attraction offering guided tours and overnight stays for thrill-seekers and history enthusiasts alike.
