The European Commission’s 2025 Climate Action Progress Report indicates another year of greenhouse gas emission reductions in 2024, confirming that the European Union remains on track to meet its 2030 climate objectives. The continued transition toward clean energy, stronger climate policies, and increasing climate finance investments are key factors behind this progress.
In 2024, the EU achieved a 2.5% drop in net greenhouse gas emissions compared to the previous year. If current and planned policies are fully executed by both the EU and its Member States, this momentum could ensure the attainment of the 2030 target: a 55% reduction from 1990 levels.
Since 1990, the EU has reduced greenhouse gas emissions by more than 37%—or 39% when excluding international aviation and shipping—while expanding its economy by 71%.
Emission reductions were supported by multiple sectors working together:
The report also highlights growing investments in adaptation measures and global climate finance, helping the EU build resilience and support international climate priorities.
The EU’s sustained emission cuts and renewed clean energy focus confirm steady progress toward achieving its 2030 climate goals while fostering economic growth.
