Franz Wagner scored 27 points, one of seven Magic players reaching double figures, as the Celtics struggled in the final moments of the game.
Last spring, the Celtics and Magic faced off in a tough first-round playoff series. The Celtics often mentioned the physicality of Orlando’s team as a major challenge. Although Boston won the series in five games, the physical battle seemed to take a toll, potentially contributing to their next-round loss to the Knicks.
Since then, both teams have undergone changes. The Magic added Desmond Bane to address their offensive struggles. Meanwhile, the Celtics have shifted into a more scrappy, underdog role, aiming to disrupt opponents’ games.
The teams met again on Friday night for an NBA Cup game. The Magic shot exceptionally well, a performance Boston was unable to overcome. The Celtics erased an early 16-point deficit and briefly took the lead early in the fourth quarter, but faltered down the stretch, losing 123-110.
Orlando made a season-best 17 of 36 three-pointers and dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Celtics by 39 points during that stretch.
"A Derrick White 3-pointer with 9:12 left gave the Celtics an 89-87 lead, their first since 12-10. But Boston started to unravel down the stretch."
The Magic’s sharp shooting and resilience overcame the Celtics’ early comeback, displaying a shift in momentum since their playoff showdown earlier this year.
