The Wild scored on their first shot, and the Islanders struggled from the start. It was a disappointing night as they failed to connect passes, turned over the puck, and were outworked by the Wild, who capitalized on the Islanders' careless play and defensive issues.
“I don’t think we executed well at all,” Anders Lee said. “I think we were clearly off from the get-go. When we struggle to break the puck out and we struggle with our turnovers, it’s going to be a long night.”
The game ended in a 5-2 loss for the Islanders on Friday at UBS Arena, closing a 1-1-1 homestand and snapping their five-game point streak at home. David Rittich made 21 saves for the Islanders, who will start a seven-game road trip against the Rangers at Madison Square Garden.
Despite the defeat, there is a quick chance to regroup. Bo Horvat, who assisted Emil Heineman’s goal that brought the Islanders within 2-1 early in the second period, reflected on the team’s performance.
“I think they beat us to a lot. I think they outworked us a lot tonight. We’ve got to correct that come [Saturday].”
Any hope from Heineman’s goal faded when defenseman Brock Faber scored from the slot just over a minute later.
“I guess you’ve got nights like this,” coach Patrick Roy commented. “You have nights where you’re on and there’s nights where you’re not on. As a group, we didn’t execute, we didn’t compete as good as they did.”
The Islanders’ poor execution and lack of effort led to their 5-2 home loss against the Wild, ending a five-game scoring streak and highlighting the need to improve quickly before their upcoming road trip.
