Thomas Hardy enthusiasts are invited to a special event featuring author Giles Keating this Thursday. Keating will present his book Thomas Hardy: 10 Lovers, 50 Poems at Waterstones in Dorchester.
Mark Chutter, chairman of the Thomas Hardy Society and author of the Foreword, will introduce the book and read a short poem with Keating. A Q&A session will follow.
Described as a unique collection of Hardy’s love poems, the book is organized by chapters, each dedicated to a different romantic partner. It includes extensive notes in accessible language and biographical insights about Hardy and his companions.
The book features new research, especially on Eliza Nicholls' life and fate.
Illustrations by Noah Warnes and stills from short films tied to each poem enrich the experience. These online films feature dramatized readings by Dorset actors and interviews with Hardy scholars such as Paula Byrne and Mark Chutter.
This event offers a comprehensive look at Hardy’s romances through poetry, visual art, and film, highlighting fresh insights and scholarly perspectives on his love life.
